I wouldn’t rate the initial years of my modern slavery life as anything near a success. Yes, it started off well with good review from my seniors and mentor. I was moving up the ladder in line the normal scale. But it did hit a snag.
At that time when I missed promotion, it did felt like shite. I saw my peers moved ahead of me. Those who missed the preceding level have all but left. As such, I decided to make a move as well.
I took a gamble by going to China, a stint that didn’t really pay off. I returned and spent a few months bumming, leveraging on the dough I made from China.
Thereafter, I joined my current employer.
The initial months were quite a struggle as I tried to programme my professional-firm type of thinking to the commercial-type. Fortunately, it has since taken a favourable turn and in the last couple of years, I would consider that my career has really taken off. I moved up the ladder rather rapidly and will soon be moving on to a regional role.
Now that I sit down and look back, I notice one thing…
The timing of the take-off coincides with the passing of my Mom. Although my religious faith would disagree, I think it must have been a blessing by Mom.

I know how you feel.
I too believe blessings from our loved ones who just passed away.
When I was still grieving for my dear sister's death (in a car accident), I secured a two years project assignment with an international company.
Then, I believed my sister was the guarding angel....
You may be a Christian, but you're also Chinese. And Chinese beliefs are older. I think you can rely on them, too.
I agree with MKL's comment above, actually.
"...I tried to programme my professional-firm type of thinking to the commercial-type."
Could you elaborate on the difference between professional and commercial type of thinking? Its sounds almost like implying that commercial thinking is unprofessional but I'm sure that's not what you meant. :-)
Really sucks when anyone's career suddenly hits a dead end, sometimes due to really dumb employers.
Glad you've managed to progress well after that :)
No disrespect to ur mom dude....but i truly believe my career would take off too if i can catch meself a sugar mommy who happens to be a datin married to umno warlords...
i thk catching sugar mommy is a hell lot easier than divine intervention...no pun intended
zewt..there's another twist to it. it is also when you started blogging actively and when i started reading your blog! :D
Hahaha. :)
Mothers often pray to God for blessings to be bestowed on their children. There is no doubt that God answered your mum's prayers for you.
God's timing is sometimes incredible and beyond our comprension, and i am happy to hear that all turned out fine for you.
so you like Oakley, i prefer Rudy Project though.
take care now bro, it's friday chill
that's really sweet of u think so n for ur mum to do so =)
That's a beautiful sentiment. Keep it with you. It's the loving and human element in your life.
hope u continue to move up in your career. all the best~! =)
Maybe your mum had a personal talk with God! :)
At any rate, good to hear you are doing better in your career now. Nothing sucks worse than a stagnant career path!
Dear Zewt,
Although a cynic may say that your career took off coz you have hit the proverbial tipping point, I'd like to believe that when someone very close to you, dies, he/she will come back as your Guardian Angel, watching over you, guiding you, and keeping you safe. And I'd like to think that your Mom is doing just that.. watching over all of you.
A mom's work is never done, eh? *laughs*
I'm sure your hard work will pay off. Just be patient.
