What’s with the name?

My parents never gave me an English name and when I hit the age of 10, I suddenly wanted one.

“Oh, don’t take that, it’s too common. Just like Steven or David (no offence), if you call out such names, 10 Stevens or 10 Davids will answer you”

That was my tuition teacher’s response when I told her I wanted to name myself Kelvin. I listened to her and decided otherwise. 2 years later, when I was 12, I had a dream, and in that dream; the teacher was marking attendance and she called out a name. No one answered. My friend sitting next to me gave me a nudge and said…

“Eh, cikgu panggil awak lah” (Eh, teacher is calling you)

I woke up from the dream almost immediately and that name became my English name since then. I will always tell this story to anyone who ask me how I got my name. Some chose not to believe, some found it strange, some started calling me “the man with a name from a dream”. No matter what, I am here to tell you… it’s true.

Yup, I do have a somewhat strange name. I never really use it until I went to the UK. But the as I entered the modern slavery kingdom, I gave my English name an official launch and everyone knows me by it since then. That’s me…

Now, I have noticed one very obvious trend with people lately. People here refer to parents with new born kids. Do you notice that more and more couples giving their newborn rather… glamorous name? Gone are the new Davids, Michaels, Johns (no offence again). None of my friends who are new parents name their child with “conventional” name. Currently, Ethan seems to be a hot name to give one’s newborn son. I personally know of 4 newly born Ethans. Other glamorous English name given includes Gabriel, Jayden, Aiden.

The baby girls are not losing out either. Gone are the Nancy(s), Wendy(s) and Mary(s). In fact, I have never known a single Mary in my life before. Some of my friends have named their baby girls Lauren, Isabelle and Megan. Quite glamorous indeed, don’t you think so?
One thing about baby girls though, the Chinese name “ann” seems to always appear in newborn nowadays. Gone are the leng, yeng, peng, ching… enters ‘ann’. There’s a multitude of li-ann(s), bee-ann(s), sze-ann(s), may-ann(s) and whatever ann(s). Are you one of those who are going to follow suit?

Our Malay comrades are not losing out either. While they cannot really take on an English name, they have creatively altered their spelling to make it more glamorous, mostly involved the letter ‘y’. Azyla instead of Azila… Dylaina instead of Dilaina… Adly instead of Adli. Again, no offence if you happen to bear such names.

Anyway, English name for Chinese has become almost a must nowadays, even if mandarin is spoken in such household. Oh no, I am not against it. But I am just curious what kind of glamorous names are going to surface in the new few years. Maybe in time to come, there will be no more David(s) and Michael(s) and when you call out the name Ethan, you will probably get 10 answers… it could happen.

So are you going to give your future child a glamorous name? One tip… if you really can't think of anymore glamorous name to make your child unique… perhaps you can sleep on it… who knows, your dream might just be fruitful.

P/S: Zewt apologises if the names above offended anyone.

Growing up, I longed for an English name. More glamour.. back in those days, most top students had English names.

My Chinese name ends with a Leng/Ling. You can imagine calling that name and half dozen girls stood up. Blek.

My parents still think that only Christian bears English names, so he doesnt really think that we kids need englsh names. =( Then again, I grew up in Port Klang, and people there are mostly named Leng, Teng, Ah Kow, AH miao~ where got english names? =P

yey my name is neither common nor glamorous. ethan or megan is okay... ive see rain, sky, venus, xavier...

All the names that you've mentioned above is still OK. I know some names that sound like machine model or car model's name which is really crazy. Nowadays, parents rarely name their kids Mary, Susan or David anymore.

I don't know why, i like the name Sarah. I think if i have a daughter, i'll give her this name..

Rashikaps said...

Interesting :) I like the name Sarah too. I like Yvonne quite a bit. Joshua is another name I like.

Unrelated to your post, I want to thank you for your assurances, Zewt.
I appreciate them very much.

I Believe.

waaa, I'm so glad my mom didn't name me May Ann then! kakakakaka!

I used to dislike not having an English name, and even though both my brothers picked their own when they were teenagers, I couldn't decide on mine at all. and then it struck me, mine is as good as any, is an English name either way and it's still my own, not plucked from some dream... LOL!

*where's Cocka?*

Weig said...

What? Elf names won't be in trend? :D

What about Cinderella, zewt? You ever found out whether that was a given or self-chosen name?

narrowband said...

Grrr... Angel was talking about me!;)

I think the reason why they're glamorous in the first place is because some big celebs have already chosen to use those names loh.

That's why, I really salute those who try to be creative and come up with their own one. Like Fruity, Tweety, 4Real (did you read the news?), etc.

Personally, I don't know many Davids around me. The same cannot be said about Michelles though!

Anonymous said...

Ok, luckily mine was not mentioned
LOL
Anyway, I just hope the creativity does not go overboard or you might have grandchild or their friends called mamee, maggi, fedex, dell, or may be even hp

i've never had an english name. of course i wanted one when i was younger cos everybody couldn't pronounce my chinese name properly. i didn't want an 'ordinary' english name and i didn't want something too outlandish/stupid either...
so in the end when i found out what my chinese name meant (tranquility and compassion) i lreally liked it and no more finding an english name since then! :)
and yes, i do agree that names are getting more and more 'glamarous'. but i guess, its what you make of your name that matters!

Give a dog a good name, the saying goes, and he/she'll be a good dog; think that what every parents have in mind when naming their kids. Unique and proper at times of joy.

I do have an english name complee with @ in IC; hold 20 alpha block minus spacing!!....can't change le; else i'll contradict what written above :D

P.S NEVER put an @ in you 'future child' name...create too much of legal hassle and certain forms doesn't have enough alpha blocks!

Mum named me after some obscure character in one of the old episodes of Charlie's Angels. When my dad asked if she really wanted to name me that, she said it was nice. After I was born, my dad told both my grandmas my name, and neither of them could pronounce it properly as they have lost their front teeth.

I already have an idea what to name my kids in future. And nope, nothing fancy-schmancy.

" ... Wilfred ... hmm ... Charles ... hmm ... Gwendoline ... hmmm ... Alfred ... hmmm"

haha~ some comments like from angie tan, is indeed a familiar situation. i remembered during my school days (i was in a so-called-prestiged-girl-school-in-kl) and you can really see it. call out azura, christine, jane, michelle, mei ling, mei ting, seok ting, etc etc and you can see herds of them shooting up their hands.

haha~ no, my chinese name is quite unique and i love it. but alas, most people who knows me will only address me by my english name.

erm.. well i won't disclose my english name but let me just tell you why i hate it. if you read it backwards, it meant bruises and blue black in one of our many languages. sucks! been teased by so many that if i hear it one more time, i'll kick his arse and give him/her a black eye for sure.

hey zewt! this post of urs is reli close to home for me in diff ways. one is that yeah, i do find that ppl are naming their babies more "funky" names w "funky" spellings, esp in aus whr "Cheryl" can be spelt "Sheryl", "Cherryl", "Sherryl" etc. And having been in my Paediatric rotation, names that are still quite rare for msians to name their babies pop up on the register, such as "Chantelle" (nice name IMHO), "Mikhala", "Jemima" (pronounced "Je-ma-ma") etc. I guess it's the multicultural influence over here.

Also, i used to give myself an English/Christian name but cos part of my name (Jun) actually sounds "English" enough, and all my fam and friends know me as Jun, i stick to it now, although i find it quite frustrating that aussies can't pronounce my monosyllabic name! :O

I am one of the few ppl to look up to when it comes to giving names to kids. I don't understand why my friend would want to name her son - Dorian. I had to brainwash her to avoid the kid from future torment. I succeeded!

So far, I have given Cornelia, Ashley, Amelia, Marcus, Bryan, Zoe to my friends' children. :)
