The price to drive

I was browsing through the comics newspaper online a while ago when I stumbled a piece of worrying news. No, I was not referring to the list of sex offenders names being released, though I have some reservations regarding that. I am referring to the latest crude oil price which just hit a record high of US$85 per barrel.

If you remember, the last increase in petrol price of RM0.30 happened in late February 2006 when the crude oil price was hovering around US$60 per barrel. It caused much uproar amongst many Malaysians with some badly hit people doing a big demonstration made themselves heard around KLCC area. Yes, it did happened, just not reported in the news.

Anyway, the price of crude oil has now soared to US$85, which is a 41.6% increase from US$60 per barrel; the price of crude oil during the last increase in petrol price in Malaysia. Oliver Jakob, managing director of Petromatrix, a consultancy firm in Switzerland was quoted
here; saying that US$90 per barrel is “within easy reach”.

Yes, our wonderful government is saying that there will be no further increase in petrol price this year. But you and I are all painfully aware that the lifespan of “this year” is fast running out. And let’s be honest with ourselves, if the election is not on its way, we may well be paying RM2.50++ per litre of petrol already. The question is then of course… what will happen after the election?
Having said that, I am dead sure that even if petrol price increases to as high as RM3 per litre, all we Malaysians will do is start f**king the government in blogs and complain about everything under the sky in our regular mamak gatherings. Maybe some will make themselves heard and seen again in KLCC. But before you know it, we will all be ordering the new Camry-s and Civic-s and play our part in contributing to traffic jam. Don’t you think so?

But you know what really bothers me? It is the usage of the savings arising from the cut in petrol subsidy which ticks me. One I could think of right now is to send a Malaysian as tourist to space. Oh, did you read the news today? Our supposedly Malaysian first astronaut has successful conducted his first space experiment…
by spinning a top (“gasing”) in space.

Hey… you and I may find it stupid, but a lot of Malaysians out there are actually quite proud it. But you know the irony of it? It is the same bunch of Malaysians who take much pride in having that dude in space and having the “gasing” played in space that will feel the pinch most should there be a price increase in petrol price. Don’t you think so?

For those people residing overseas, don’t you dare say that petrol price will still be cheap if it hit RM3 per litre here in Malaysia. Yes, it may be US$0.86 per litre (RM3) but when you consider that the average income per capita in Malaysia is US$496 per month as at 2006 (source:
Malaysian National Budget Speech 2008), petrol is freaking expensive.

Well, what am I getting at here? With the second dude also heading to space in the near future; all I can say is… brace yourself for the inevitable.

P/S: I have to say it… the experiment performed by our space tourist is just so damn fu*ked up.
P/S/S: Anyone upgrading their car?

Yeah... i think the price will increase mostly after next year or after the election.. time to use back bicycle!!! kekekek..

vincent said...

Since you very correctly pointed out the rise in global crude oil price, as in the price of crude oil is same all over the world, then surely the income per capita is irrelevant?

You may be in US or Burma with an average income per capita miles apart, but the price of crude oil is the same, no?

For those who do not know...the news of our space tourist being sent up to do a few minor tricks and treats, to appease those numpty policitians has also been reported in the BBC last week. Yes, what failed to make it into our readings in Malaysia has been reported as a deal struck between our Malaysian govt and the Russian for US$25 million for their effort to send our goon up in space, and also a US$600 million to buy 19 aircraft jets.

There you go...I very much doubt the govt has much left to subsidise the common rakyat

Vincent, it all boils down to affordability. Simply said, because of the difference, petrol is easily affordable for the americans but not the burmese.

Gasing without gravity need to test??? How come the self proclaimed 2020 visionaries are not embarrassed at all?

kyh said...

Hmm with all the hoohaas around the price of oil all these times, I dont seem to bother about it bcos it doesnt bother me for the time being. :P

Care to elaborate more on the "fcked up" experiment done by our dear astronaut?

And btw, how did u put the disclaimer "The author cannot be held responsible for any comments or trackbacks that may deem as sensitive or controversial." on ur comments page?

gosh... i hope i get a big increament :(

well, considering it's for a scientific experiment (or scientific proof?) im not (that) angry at him for testing a gasing in space... but it does make you wonder a bit tho.

oil prices increasing by more than 40%?? damn!.. we're gonna see a major increase in prices of every darn thing then. brilliant.

vincent said...

Actually, you can make noise about spinning a gasing in space, but do you know what actually happens when you do that experiment? Not the slightest bit curious?

Back to the oil issue. It does NOT depend on affordability. It depends on refining costs and how much each individual government or company is prepared to subsidise.

You are free to complain about the way the government goes about spending the money they saved by slashing the subsidies.

But don't talk about the prices of gasoline elsewhere when you do not know how the pricing mechanism and subsidy scheme works.

conan_cat said...

oh yeah, that experiment is so darn fucked up. i can't help but laugh when i read the news, using so much money to send him up just to spin a gasing, and yeah our PM promised that our space tourist will play batu seremban there too.

and ouch that really hurts, USD$85 per barrel is really, really painful @__o my god... perhaps that will really make people stop driving for once and public transports will be overhelmed. but then, public transport in msia?? do they exist?

Anonymous said...

Looks like the grass is really greener here.. or should I say, the oil is blacker/oilier?? :D
You wanna come here instead? *grin*

Observer said...

Problem is their "excuse" is the "gasing" shit inspires school children..... kids.... it's really trying to create artificial "Malaysia" Boleh spirit....

At the end of the day, only the kids were conned.. while the tax payers end up being the suckers.

Sending the next to the space again at the expense of tax payers really should have the papers debate the merit on it, it aint cheap..

Well, I guess even the space man is pissed he has to do some gasing in space than something he truly believe is fun

frostee said...

It would sure be a big bite off my pocket.

UPgrading car? HAha! You kidding right?

Vincent: Time for some prozac dude. Calm down.

Helen said...

I don't need to look into the crystal ball to predict the oil price is going up.....

Let's hope the kelapa sawit for replacement fuel is going to take off. Any serious funding to do more experiments? Nope, not in space... in our good old ladang kelapa sawit.

Vincent, you are right, it does NOT depend on affordability. But, it always ended up with...whether the people can afford it.

One country can subsidies 99%, yet still meaningless if the people cannot afford it. That is where the income per capita comes into the picture.

J u n e said...

We shall all ride bicycle, roller blade, skateboard, walk, use horse, use cow, use everything that doesnt involve petrol to go places in the future. Horses are pretty cool btw. =p

And a gasing? ...-______________- *dies*

zewt said...

kukujiaoman - it good actually if everyone uses the bicycle... help reduce global warming... haha.

vincent - hi and welcome. i have to go with whisperingshout, it's about affordability and not price. yes, i do not know how does the pricing mechanism works. but like i said... i am not concern about the price of the petrol... i am concern about the usage of the savings arising from the cut in subsidy. that's the whole point of my blog actually.

anon aka Michelle K - hi michelle. i think what you mentioned is in our mind without you saying it. we have become the world's laughing stock.

whisperingshout - calm down bro... i will go with you on affordability. it's also about the usage of the savings. and yes, the gasing test is just ridiculous and it appears that our vision lies with this gasing... hopeless.

kyh - you can go into your settings... comments and there is an option there... cool eh? as for fucked up experiments... sigh, wait till the paper reports more.

sunshine - very hopeful you are...

zewt said...

Zaty - let's be honest... what kinda experiment can he possibly perform in space??? yeah, those sharks are ready to make a kill when the petrol price increases.

conan_cat - they exist... non-existent kinda exist... i am talking crap... just too fed up with what's happening... sigh.

kat - there is an opening for a job there actually... hmmmm...

freethinker - if the spaceman have honour... he should have stamp a mark and admit that he is merely a tourist and not trying to fit in some gasing trick and call it experiment.

FON @ frostee - yeah man... he is way too hot at the moment. you damn syiok la... all the way in DC.

Helen - it works... but it's very pollutant concentrated... so not going to happen.

AngryYoungChild - i dont mind a horse really. and that is not cheap u know...

so u mean, the price of petrol isn't yet at RM3? how much is it?

anyway, i'll say it! PETROL IS SO CHEAP IN MALAYSIA! :D

even if it gets to RM3.

I'm paying Rs 41.50, that's US$ 1.35 How bout that? And we're no better than Malaysians with our lifestyle! I can assure you.

I've been holding my plans over the past year to tune my car, because of the actual price of petrol, tuning means more petrol consumption, which means paying more at the station, which i can't for the time being, with prices going up every 3 months. pft.

btw, did u get my mail bout KPMG thingy?

I better stick to dad's idea of having just a savvy then. with me just started working, I don't think I can afford to fill in the tank of any imported cars. maybe it's better to just use public transport to go anywhere here in my place but I bet the fares will be up in no time also.

Look, it all boils down to your votes. Really, just vote the ruling party out. Some said their 1 vote doesn't make a difference. Then stop complaining when the present ruling party decides to raise petrol prices by another 30 sen. Or use your money to send a space tourist all for the pride of a race masked under the banner of a nation.

Every vote matters. It will send a message across. Also, if you like to walk the talk in other ways, come join the marching party in Dataran Merdeka on 10 Nov 2008 at 3pm. A memorandum will be submitted to the Agong to seek for a free and fair election.

Only you can make the difference. If you want to rely on others, then why don't you give up your jobs and wait for kindness of others to provide for your needs? Even you don't believe that so why say your vote matters not?

We were over in Brunei 2 days ago. Petrol there is cheaper than mineral water but as of Oct 1, they limit you to BND10 max per car per station. There goes our plan to get a full tank of petrol before coming back.

So if Brunei is setting a limit, how much do you think the price increase would be for Malaysia?

Whether or not the oil price increase, the govt would still increase our petrol price. The time when the world's oil price increase, our petrol price increased. Then at one time, the oil price actually dropped quite a lot. But our petrol price still remain high. Actually, I just don't understand. We are the ones having the oil. The increase should benefit us. Instead, we sell the petrol off at high price, then buy lousier petrol from Arab that side and charge so high to our own people. Sigh!

Angie Tan said...

the price will continue to rise and no doubt that the govt will raise the price again, irregardless of whether elections are called or not. the govt will provide their own "spin" but with the crude oil prices spiraling upwards, no doubt this will be the basis for the price increase.

I am wondering how spending all this money sending "flight participants" into space is going to help us become more prosperous. Maybe the Minister could explain it to me, since doubtless I am missing something here.

The money was spent like sending a jerk to space with no objective or whatsoever... Spinning a top in space and do stunts in space? Huh.. That shows how stupid our govt and the idiot in space are..

Seems like malaysian farking care about the price of the oil rather than how our government spent the promised RM4.4 billion saving from oil subsidy. Yes, it's RM4.4 billion or RM4400 million!!! Now, they said the money will be used for public transportation improvements, where?? Anything new? Less congested now? Fark it! And, the price of petrol was raised 30 cent and that was before the ringgit strengthened against the US dollar, the USD was 3.7 then. Now it is 3.68 and bank negara said that its going to strenghten more against USD.

Technically speaking, the total saving is actually more than 4.4 billion. so, if there is no more 4.4billion for the transport industry, at least there should be 2 billion or 1. Oh.. for the space tourist-s(they are going to send another one up), repairs of what shitty government buildings, merdeka celebration (fuiyoh.. purposely flew in the car for Mr. Abdullah Badawi to impersonate Y.M Tunku Abdul Rahman.. ceshh....) Biar bergaya asal papa, that's apt to describe what our ministers think. Guys, farking utilise your vote lah! Sick of everyone that is saying his/her 1 vote doesn't make a difference. The price of oil has to be cheaper..to compensate for the tolls that we need to pay everytime we want to so called use the "Express Way".. Yes, oil prices overseas are much more expensive because I am not sure the government subsidies it but they have less toll to cross...Just take the example in Thailand... petrol is more expensive BUT from south to north, you can use their roads and dont pay a single cent and I mean good paved roads...

I thought you r kidding about the gasing show... I read from Asia News magazine that a Malaysian Singh guy is going to space on medical research... And I thought finally some smart fella....

Cut all subsidies on the price of petrol and let it float at the real price per gallon. This should have the effect of cutting all the excess traffic off the roads and will stop families earning RM800 a month from keeping 3 cars at home; one for each family member! This should also discourage the fucking mat rempit from tearing around town all night. People should be taken off those bloody motorbikes and put into air-con buses instead. With the savings from the reduction of subisidies, invest in the public transport system, make the LRT actually go to places that people live instead of just going to useless tourist sites, buy news buses and better bus shelters. Sell off Proton and their useless junk piles to VW and let them do whatever they want with it. Malaysias automobile programme is non sustainable in the long term and the number of cars has to come down and lazy fat malaysians have to learn to stop driving up the doorstep of everywhere they go and illegally parking if there is no parking space and start thinking about doing some walking.

it's basic economics though. there's no way our govt can keep on subsidizing our petrol. it's about time that us, as the final consumers to realign our lives for the higher petrol prices. i think malaysians probably have one of the highest vehicle per capita in the world, because of our subsidized fuel.

with that said, there s a lot of repercussion in other areas - inflation, cost of living, food, logistics etc. it's also time for govt to clean its act, and stomp down the wastage in the civil services, and give ppl its money back.
