Parole?... Oh no...

I usually don’t blog on Friday night but reading about the news of the imminent parole system warrants a break of tradition…
If there is a piece of news to be included in the Guinness Book of Records, this has gotta be it. Parole system for… Ma-lay-sia? You gotta be kidding me. Don’t get me wrong, I have got nothing against the parole system, it’s just that I refuse to believe it can be effectively implemented in a country which can’t even patch up our ceilings of the parliament and court properly.

“… prisoners released under the system will be required to report to a parole centre daily or weekly…”

Allow me to make a prophecy on this…

3 years down the road…
“Bus crashed into ravine, driver appears to be a parole inmate”

3 years and 2 days down the road…
“Driver of bus tragedy has not reported to parole centre for 1 year”

3 years and 3 days down the road…
“Nationwide hunt for drivers who are non-reporting parole inmates”

3 years and 6 days down the road…
“Business as usual for Malaysians”

Very funny isn’t it? Did you laugh?

“Reduce maintenance cost” they said… I wonder how much money will be spent to “set up courses to help them assimilate into society”… I wonder if they will purchase high tech gadgets to track all these parole inmates. And of course… there is a question of who is going to… I need not say further.

There are many things this nation would like to embark on, and many a times, they are things which are too big for our plate. We can build mega-structures and they fail… it’s fine, just money wasted. We can launch a Free Zone and it fails to take off… it’s fine, just money wasted. We can send a hero to space to play ‘batu seremban’… it’s fine, just money wasted. But to release criminals on parole in a country where enforcement level is (I do not need to say further)… we are treading on dangerous grounds… very dangerous grounds. This is something too big for our plate.

Complaining without giving any suggestion is futile. So, if I may suggest… this parole system is only eligible to those who were convicted with civil offence, not for those convicted with criminal offence such as rapists and robbers, don’t you think? But then again, even if they take this suggestion, we might just have headlines with the same flavour 3 years down the road… I am sure you can make up what it is.

P/S: Don’t worry, no matter what, I am sure
the food still taste as good here.

One more avenue for certain bastards to make money. Pay up and you get your parole.

As far as I know, people don't get sent to prison for civil offences. Civil courts are for people to sue each other (civillians suing civillians) -- imprisonment is not one of the penalties. It's only criminal offences that carry the possibility of imprisonment as a penalty.

Rather, you're thinking about minor and major offenses. But who is to decide what is major and what is minor? I would say repeat offenders definitely should not be released on parole. But that's as far as I can generalise.

3 years and 1 week...
parole inmates selected for cabinet

Who would trust such a system when all the clearly written rules are twisted like nobody's business?!

I can't believe Malaysia wants to implement the parole system, as it is we have too much to handle what more will this bring about.

Definitely, a big No-No to the idea! They are criminals and shouldn't be released (even on parole) as they have committed serious offenses unless the government can prove to the public that they 'truly' have the whole thing figured out should these criminals from parole escape. In which I don't think they have considered enough.

and hasilox, good one!

then these few days i heard news about people getting dengue fever in there. 7 of them to date i think.

then here comes parole system. reduce cost konon... = =" and lol prisons overcrowded? it's obviously a sign of how efficient our law and police are... well at least prisoners get to have something to do lol

one has a strange ( but understandable feeling ) that our civil servants( + those goment people ) entrusted with doing things when proposing anything new or changes to something 'better' invariably have an ulterior selfish motive(s), so here in Malaysia everything is not what it seems. As we now think our PM is not what he seems and DPM also not what he says etc etc etc Look at MSC , look at Cyberjaya now look at Iskandar and so on and so on.
the only defense or to remain sane is to hahaha !

Parole?? So is that the huge budget for when they allocated 6 billion for more police personnels? So that they have more police force out there to catch back all the criminals and make them look as if they're doing their job?

*puts away yellow shirt with a sigh*

*no see eye liao*

*goes to look for some ways to escape mud and go to grassier lands*

lol!!!!

we already face a shortage of police to hunt down the criminals, now we need to babysit them so that they don't overcrowd the prisons, hence increase maintenance??

another 1/2 baked idea by 1/2 baked politicians and law-makers.

what to do, we are HP6 nation...

i think this warrants our policymakers another few more study trips to OZ and UK. a few more million burned ppl!

it definitely wouldn't work. as much as i 'trust' some malaysians, this is not good at all. but then again, who knows better. :)

A parole system that is set up primarily to reduce cost is a definite NO NO.

They dun have money to uphold justice and the sentence and yet they have plenty to squander on useless promo that is not generating any revenue for the states like some sailing cup. ;-(

I wanna be a politician in future in MALAYSIA coz i know i'm gonna be rich!!!

Muahahaha!!!!!

Zewt,

Parole is only for criminals. Civil offences do not carry punitive sentences. Civil is only money compensation.

Corruptors, battery, grievous bodily harm, kidnap, false imprisonment, harrassment, contempt of court, etc, are all criminal offences.

Parole system did work well in UK, US and other countries. It is about second chance for a person who made a wrong decision and will turn over a new leaf.

tingtitlei - c'mon.... no breaks... keep it going.

kata tak nak - a lot of things can happen if you can pay.

sunflower - no matter how we put it... i just dont have confidence that our country can implement it.

hasilox - hahahaha.... that would really be a whammy isnt it?

MeLiSsa - with our ways of handling things, i just cant give them the benefit of the doubt. and it's the citizen's lives at risk here.

Sasha - hahahahaha.... shoot them eh...

zewt said...

penang-kia - 'mega sales'... i am looking at it from the other side... pay premium and u can ... u know...

conan cat - being released is not exactly something we would like them to do... no?

narrowband - agreed.

winn - who ah? :P

Doreen - the risk is too high... for me at least.

Princess Shin - hahaha... will u vote for me?

team bsg - everything seems to be out of place after 50 years eh? not exactly as rosy as the press said it is.

zewt said...

seaqueen - maybe that's why... in anticipation of more 'catching' to do.

rinnah - look look look... dont stop looking.

angie tan - i tot they are already doing it. and they are planning to build a multi million ringgit 'resort' in UK called the sports performance centre.

Helen - like some here said... this might just be another fund raising exercise.

pookyma - me too... hehehehe...

maverick sm - so you're asking me to give them the benefit of the doubt? no cant do.

ardy said...

Hohoh! Makes you wonder what they'll come up with next?!

Probably the dole system! I'll be the 1st one to quit my job and starts queing for my first paycheck for doing nothing ;)

When they suggested the parole system they have the rich underworld kings in mind. Tengku Goh and friends will be able to pay their way after they will be rounded up to make a show that the government are really serious to control organized crime.

ahjohn said...

The bill to run the prison is about blah blah blah million ringgits. Of it, 75% goes to the pocket, and next three years and four days, the minister annouce that the roof leak again, this time the prison ceilings..

Why? read Sunday's star newspaper...teh cost of buying screwdrivers, etc etc....

The next time we do election, remember to vote for an ACCOUNTANT!

Look, one way or other, parole system is not new in the world. It is tried and tested. But of course, in the hands of our gomen, one must wonder, are we charting new lows to discourage wider implementation in the rest of the world?

sharlydia said...

Like maverick sm said, Parole system is not something new, but new to Malaysia...I think we'r not concern at all whether it works elsewhere or not, but more concern that it will not "work" well here due to our "powderful" gobermen & even more "powderful" policemen! We have long lost our confidence...

Mcmercedez said...

Sigh.. Yet another thing that they want to do and follow other countries.. Minus the deep thought..

Very sad..

Azlan Zed said...

brass band & cheer leading competition and now parole system. we are so american. NOT !

zewt said...

ardy - hahaha... i may just do that too. then start a new blog to blog for money haha!

Zawi - yo! welcome! did u read the news today... another king pin arrested... opportunity at the horizon perhaps.

ahjohn - no one knows who is an accountant running for any political post though. haha...

anon @ 7.47am - we always like to set new standards. after all... we always try to 'beat the record' when it comes to low.

sharlydia - losing confidence is one thing...but when it's someting that will really affect us... we shouldnt just sit there and do nothing.

mcmercedez - minus enforcement... very scary.

alan zed - u sure... check out the flag... :P

And one more thing, there will be more and more gang rapists walking on the street. Come on, in saving some maintenance cost, the government actually increase the national crime rate!

zewt said...

jam - sigh... sigh... no eye see.

Cherry Popcorn said...

If I know that its you.. I'll vote for you! =)

hmmm, i agreed with what maverick sm said, parole is not something new. Secondly I am not sure how driving bus and criminal act like larceny and assault is correlated - the more someone steal, the less driving skill he has? Morever, if parolee has to support himself with employment, bus driving should not be one of it? Fourth: consider this scenario, a guy is sentenced to 15 years in jail, what would be the difference for a)after serving 10 years he got parole, b) he served full sentence in terms of the guy returning to society? What would be the difference for "bus crashed into ravine, driver appear to be a parolee or ex-criminal?"

zewt said...

princess shin - woooaaah... thanks in advance, i m honoured :)

mich - i think you didnt read about the bus crash recently... u r not seeing the whole picture ler...

I think it will work - good work Malaysia. Statistics from NZ, UK, and Aus show that the system works. We are getting help from the best to set it up so that is great!!!! Go Malaysia!
