A first of such

Back from Hong Kong… and we were in Sai Kung, renown for its seafood delicacies. I must say this small town gives you a totally different perspective of Hong Kong. But then again, the people here don’t consider Sai Kung as Hong Kong per se. To them, Sai Kung is part of the New Territory (“San Kai”).

By the way, my bro-in-law was the driver. He has been living here for almost 10 years. Picture below is the convoy to Sai Kung with his mates. Yes, that’s a Porsche and an Aston Martin. Life is good when you are an investment banker in Hong Kong.

Anyway, after lunch and a nice dessert, we went to get the car. I must say, parking here is truly horrendous. Getting into the parking lot and finding a space is huge task. Getting out is equally challenging.

On the way out, there was this pink Honda Jazz ahead of us, looking for car park. The driver tried to squeeze into a few lots but failed. The final attempt was this parallel-park slot. By now, traffic has already built up behind us. And unlike here, there is no way you can drive past the car until it is completely parked inside the slot.

In… out… left… right… left… reverse… forward… tension was building. I think my bro-in-law was getting impatient and suggested… “Eh Zewt, why don’t you go do it”.

It was then that the driver got out of the car and approached us, who were right behind her (yes, it’s a she)…

“Ho jak ah, ho em ho yi pong hah ngo ah?”
(It’s very tight, could you help me please?)

I got it done within a minute and as I walked back to my bro-in-law’s car, I saw drivers at the back applauding in their respective cars. I wonder if this is common in HK.

A first of such experience for me, what about you?

I wonder if she could drive her car out of the lot, or did she ask for help too.

Since we changed to a longer car, it's getting so hard for me to parallel-park. I practiced at a remote area for quite some time but i still couldn't master it. I avoid driving to the city now..

*applause*

Reminds me of a video I saw on Youtube. I wonder if the woman wasn't afraid of carjackers who'd just drive her car away (not saying you lah, of course, but generally :P).

Dear Zewt

Yes, you are hero because you helped her - selflessly.

This reminds me of what Paulo Coelho wrote in "The Alchemist" -“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it” – Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, Page 22

Have a great holiday Zewt!

Salut! Our own Malaysian hero in HK! Parking certainly counts! Maybe it's from all our experiences with double and triple parking here in Malaysia, hehe.

LOL... I know my 62yo auntie pulled the same stunt in Malaysia... she can't see very well at night, and couldn't parellel park her little Kancil so she hopped out of the car, and called this young chap standing by, "Eh, leng chai, help auntie park car, can?"... :D

So did she tip you?!!

I've forgotten how to parallel park. ;) But I'd have gone and looked for two lots together and then parked the car.

eh.. this reminds me.. haha.. there's one time (long long time ago) i was driving my bf's manual toyota KE70, thinking of ways to avoid slopes but went to one very steep one at oug. was praying hard no car stop behind me but god loves me so much, a car stopped and i got panicked, car stalled and engine off. tried to balance again but failed. so the driver behind me came up and ask if my car is alright.. i told him "the car is ok.. but i'm not! i dunno how to drive it up!" so he hopped in my seat and drove it up for me! paiseh man!!

I'd love to offer my help. Especially if she's a hottie. That said, I'd help anyway whoever requested. Proud lah then holding Malaysian driving license. I paid RM200 extra you know cos the driving school made it sound like it was compulsory and all my friends also paid ;p

narrowband said...

oh btw i recently have to apply for international driving license from AAM (few months ago - and it's valid for a year) because i will be driving in aussieland. there was another way of doing it - that is to convert my msian license to sporean one. The std sporean license will be recognized in aussieland. I recently had to take IELTS (SGD300 borne by company) because aussies think malaysians live on trees and speak chimp language. The sporeans dont have to cos their medium of instruction throughout their formal edu was in english. yay. proud malaysian i am. what an enlightening experience it's been for me!

zewt said...

narrowband - yeah... and many malaysians thought that just becos we have a space tourist and a formula 1 team we can conquer the world...
