Knee surgery tomorrow

This has happened much quickly than expected. The surgeon I saw last Wednesday said he would be able to operate tomorrow. He is the same surgeon who operated on the knee of national badminton player Julia Wong.

Well, I am very comfortable with his explanation and he gave me a lot of confidence. Hence, I am going under the knife tomorrow. I was mentally prepared to get this done in July and now that this has been brought forward, I have to admit I feel a little strange.

I have yet to decide on whether I should go on local anaesthetic or get knocked out on general anaesthetic. Would certainly need wisdom on this.

Though it is not a very life threatening surgery, I do appreciate prayers support and hopefully everything will turn out well.

Thanks for all your well wishes and catch you guys later…

  6. if you have the possibilty, you should most certainly choose local anesthetics.
    1. it's safer!!!
    2. pain is recepted on the periferia but sensed in the brain. if the limb is numb, it's like a phone with a cut wire. but if only the brain is "shut down", you don't feel the pain but several additional pain "channels" are activated (hipothalamus, amygdala, and so on) so after surgery you might have some "aftershocks"

  8. ive been for two surgeries under g.a. it turned out well. but if i had a choice, i might choose l.a. simply because theres less risk involve.

its a little scary being completely knocked out and not having any control over your body for a couple of hours.

that being said, the risk under g.a is quite low.

all the best for your surgery =)

  17. don't stress lah. i've gone under thrice for my ankles. relax. ask for some weed before and after the op. hey, you gotta' try right? say it's for the pain or something. might wanna' also ask them to put titanium plates in there so you come out part man, part superman but no robocop ah please.

you'll be back to your ronaldo ways in no time. make sure you stick to your physio regime. that's very crucial.

  22. i presume it's key-hole surgery which is why you have choice of g.a. or local.

i'd still take g.a. too stressful to be around when the procedure is being done.

  23. Hi Zewt, hope all goes well for you. I was wondering if it is an open operation or a 'needle hole' (arthroscopic) one. Usually LA better if you can tahan. GA has many side effects. Hope to hear from you here soon! :)

  24. Oh yeah. Key hole. What needle hole. HAHAHHA Needle too small lah! Arthroscopy is okay, I have seen those for shoulders. Amazing stuff (because I don't understand at all..)!

  25. Hi,

You should do what you feel most comfortable doing. If it is not a long operation and you have the choice, you may feel its okay to go down the 'local' route. I did it once for a lower limb operation. The anaesthetist was present throughout the op. People chatted to me, I was fully informed what was happening, I preferred this, and I believe recovery was quicker as a consequence of the use of 'local'. I doesn't work for everyone nor for every kind of procedure. It is surprising though, just what is now operated on, without a general.

Take care and get well soon. XX
