Chick on Chinese

A guy who called himself Michael Chick really cracks me up. He wrote an article and it was published in the ever famous Malaysia Today which carries much truth and written without withholding any attempt to be tactful. Some of the brutal honesty quotes includes…

“…these brain dead Chinese proudly pat themselves on the back and proudly call it “Manglish”, while their idiot Singaporean cousins proudly call it “Singlish”…”

“…You claim economic dominance. But in reality, are you really in charge?...”

“…What future does your child have, being raised by foreign maids?...”

“…Furthermore, all you care about is about FOOD…”

I would strongly recommend all to have a peep at the article, which Michael Chick titled it as
“Malaysian Chinese are Stupid”. See if you agree. Even if you don’t, I reckon it will be a good laugh.

  5. So another article written by a so-called English-ed kid ya? Well, undeniably, English is important, the world's lingua franca in commerce, science and dialy lives, but ~ with the rapid rise of China to superpower status, that won't last for long. 15th-19th century is the European century. 20th the American. As for the 21st, it's acknowledged that the attention would be focused on the developing world, and in this case, China and India, and the likes of Brazil and Russia. Chinese language has started to gain grounds throughout the world, we all knew that. Soon, the West will be conducting daily businesses not only in English, but also Chinese!

And now, having a good command in English doesn't guarantee you a bright future. Well, I don't deny its benefits in today's world, but it's not the only requirement that one needs to progress. Take Japan for example. I can say that over 95% of their people have a poor command of the language, but still, they managed to rebuild their homeland in 30 years' time after WW2. Now Japan emerges as one of the most prosperous and technologically advanced nations on Earth, as well as one of the wealthiest. Hey, English really isn't everything!

Ok, I know the author is being humorous. So I'll jz take it as a joke. :P

  6. English is an important language but not a measure for intelligent. British and American speak English, does it mean they are more clever than anyone else who don't speak English? Common, a lot of Anglo-saxon companies are rushing to China, now it's their turn to learn a FOREIGN language.

It is hard to deal with the "kwai loh" nowadays. If you speak English they said your English is rubbish. If you look like Chinese and you don't speak Chinese, they ask you how come you are Chinese but not speak Chinese? Difficult to satisfy.

  8. whoalse - sometimes, we need to be blunt to get to the facts.

_butt - hahaha... that one is classic.

Helen - you will love the article.

Poseidon - yup... it has... definitely.

kyh - i think the author is trying to kick some sense into chinese and languague is one of them.. i think he want us to see other points... other more important ones. but you're right... with china being the next superpower... mandarin will soon be a more desired language.

Bee Ean - hahahaha... yeah, i get that a lot. but as least i speak my mother tongue. well, i think we chinese in a malaysia is in an identity crisis we are not aware of.

Lynnwei - very true in fact :)

  10. I still believe Malaysian Chinese speak and write better English than Malay. Just look at the word, "manglish". 'ma' stands for malay, isn't it? No offence here, just sharing the truth.

  12. huei, the website malaysia today has been critical to all races, political parties and many things.

RPK/Peter/Petra criticizes everyone, be it malay, chinese, indian, BN, UMNO, MCA, PAS, PKR, DAP, Anwar, Kit Siang and so on! It's good i think. As a wake up call.... lolx... btw, that article is not written by RPK.

  13. That MC guy is really one of a kind! To the point and really no-holds-barred.

Good to see that he had generally achieved what he intended the article to be.

He already expects the reaction. It would be interesting to see what would happen if he writes about some 'other' races. I bet you there will be lotsa foamed mouths with a you tube video calling for his head to be severed from his torso!

ANyways... time to send my resumes out to my contacts!

  14. What a pussy! He/She goes on critising the Chinese way of life but fails to offer his warped thoughts as to how it should be.

Why do some people bitch so much about how another race live their lives? Maybe the author of the article should tell us which is the perfect race but of course, he/she is a coward.

If people start thinking about this garbage,it's like they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Live your life! Or in the case of the author, get a life!

  15. Come to think of it. If it wasn't due to the expansive British colonialism and American imperialism in the last century, who would wanna learn English? For the most part of the 20th century, people has been speaking English and stressing on its importance not because of the waning Brits (their empire did resolve didn't they, though they still retain some colonies), but because of America's hyperpower status as the Americans term it. A great power dictates the so and sos of the world. America did that. They've succeeded, but they won't gonna sit on the throne for eternity.

As for Chinese speaking poor English, I really beg to differ. We have lots of us who have a great command of the language (not only Eng-ed, a big percentage of those Chinese-eds can speak and write well too!). When we learn a language, we tend to put emphasis on its grammar and sentence structures. You gotta know, Chinese sometimes speak/write better than those Americans! Look at George Bush and all his grammatical errors, then u'll get what I mean.

  20. Ever since I finished school I didn’t think I would want to have anymore lessons ever again, however recently I have wanted to learn a foreign language, maybe become fluent in one and basic in a couple of others. I did a bit of research and found there were loads of different packages available I went with one that claims you teach yourself French and I was impressed it was a computer program that helped with pronunciation and speaks back to you so you can hear it too.
